ELL Extension Update

Part of line between Dalston Junction and Highbury & IslingtonThe next stage of the East London Line upgrade is due to open soon.  It is rumoured that LOROL are planning a ‘soft start’ for the extension to Highbury & Islington starting on February 14, in the same way that service was gradually introduced from New Cross Gate to Dalston Junction when the ELL was reopened last year.  Full service is not due to start officially until the end of May.

Once the service is up and running, there will be eight trains an hour in each direction from Highbury & Islington to West Croydon and Crystal Palace.  The core section (from Surrey Quays to Dalston Junction) will continue to benefit from an additional 4tph to New Cross.

The final extension of the East London Line (for now) will be the extension to Clapham Junction via Queen’s Road Peckham, Peckham Rye and Denmark Hill.  It had been expected that this phase (known as ELLX2) would be completed in time for the Olympics in 2012, but the finish line has now been pushed back to December 2012 as a result of uncertainty due to the Comprehensive Spending Review.
