Walk on the Wild Side at Horniman Gardens
FREE

Join Garden supremo Gordon for a guided walk around the Horniman Gardens and discover one of London’s oldest nature trails. 1.5 hours, 1.5 miles, suitable for all ages and abilities, some steps, stout footwear advisable. Bring a drink.

Meet at the Bandstand in Horniman Gardens at 18.30. Rail: Forest Hill (10 mins) Buses: 176, 312, P4, 356 and 363 to the Horniman.

Healthy Walks in Horniman Gardens, Forest Hill

Join us for a sociable guided walk in the fresh air with an opportunity to meet the Gardening Team who created and cherish the “Best Park in the South East”. We finish with a cuppa in the café, which serves drinks and snacks. Suitable for all ages and abilities, some steps and slopes. 45 mins walk, up to one mile.

Meet in Hornimans Gardens by the first benches by the main gates on London Road SE23. Rail: Forest Hill (10 mins) Buses: 176, 312, P4, 356 and 363 to the Horniman.

Atop the North Wood Hills (full walk) from Nunhead to Crystal Palace
FREE

A more challenging walk along the high green ridge that separates Lewisham from Southwark, with much of the route along the old Nunhead to Crystal Palace railway line. This interesting route includes woodlands and newly restored parks. Led by the London Wildlife Trust and primarily for adults as young children cannot be easily catered for, nor is the walk accessible for the less mobile – with muddy paths, steps and steep slopes. 6 hours including 1hr lunch break, approx. 6 miles. Stout footwear advisable. Bring a drink, Horniman Museum provides the halfway stop en route, where a café and toilets are available. The walk resumes at 14.00 from the entrance of Hornimans Gardens. Cafes and pubs are available at the end of the walk at Crystal Palace.

Join the North Wood Hills walk, continuing a stroll along the highest ridges in South London, with much of the route of the old Crystal Palace (High Level) railway being explored. The route includes a woodland nature reserve and newly restored parks. 3 hours, 3 miles, primarily for adults as young children cannot be easily catered for, nor is the walk accessible for the less mobile – with muddy paths, steps and steep slopes. Bring a drink, café and toilets at the start in Horniman Gardens and at the end at Crystal Palace.

Meet at the entrance to Horniman’s Gardens at 14.00 just off London Road SE23. Rail: Forest hill (10 mins walk). Buses: 185, 176, P4 outside, 63 nearby. Finish at Crystal Palace Museum, Crystal Palace Park SE20 Rail: Crystal Palace Bus: Buses to Sydenham, Forest Hill, Catford and Lewisham from Crystal Palace Bus Station, Crystal Palace Parade.

Come on a Historical Walk and find out many interesting things about the area that was once Sydenham Common. 2 hours, 3.25 miles, some slopes and muddy paths, sensible footwear advisable. Bring a drink, refreshments available to buy at end of walk in Hornimans Gardens. Suitable for all ages and abilities.

SE23 Pub Walk from Forest Hill to Crofton Park with SE London CAMRA

A 3 mile walk visiting 5 splendid pubs serving real ale and non-alcoholic drinks, taking approximately 4 hours in total, including a walk over Blythe Hill to take in the views. Walkers can join and leave at points along the way, or stay for the whole walk. Itinerary is: 2.00pm to 3.00pm: Capitol, London Rd, then 3.10pm to 3.40pm: Railway Telegraph, Stanstead Rd, 4.20pm to 5.00pm: Rutland Arms, Perry Hill, 5.10pm to 6.10pm: Blythe Hill Tavern, Stanstead Rd, 6.40pm to whenever…: Mr Lawrences Wine Bar in Brockley Road. Arranged by SE London CAMRA group especially for non-members. Over 18s only, one steep hill in Blythe Hill Lane with alternative route.

A Walk Through Sydenham Hill Woods to Dulwich Toll Gate

Join a circular woodland walk from Hornimans Gardens in Forest Hill through the woods to Dulwich Toll Gate and back by a different route. Some uneven surfaces, muddy if wet, some steps and slopes, stout footwear advisable, not likely to be suitable for pushchairs or wheelchairs or very young children. Distance 3.5 miles duration 2 hours. Bring a drink.

Meet at the Café in Hornimans Gardens, London Road, Forest Hill. Rail: Forest Hill (10 mins walk). Buses P4, 176, 312, 356, 185 to Hornimans. Refreshments and toilets available in Café at start and end of walk
